ASTM F1566 | Firmness Retention and Surface Deformation | Cornell Testing
In the mattress industry, the fundamental goal is to develop a mattress that will maintain quality and retain firmness over a long period of use. The Cornell Test within ASTM F1566 was created to measure two critical elements of a mattress, firmness retention and surface deformation, at various cycle points from 0 to 100,000 cycles in efforts to simulate mattress performance after approximately 10 years of use.
ADMET’s H-Frame Cornell Mattress Tester is designed to perform the Cornell Test without the need for operator interaction. The system comes equipped with a specialized controller in which the user specifies the desired cycle points and initiates the test. The system then cycles between two forces per the specification, and automatically takes measurements at the specified cycle points. Upon test completion, a report displaying the force values at specified deflections for each cycle point is generated for calculation of surface deformation and firmness retention.

ASTM F1566 Firmness Retention and Surface Deformation – Cornell Test Procedure
- Insert mattress onto the test frame and slide actuator as necessary so that the desired test location is under the ram head.
- Specify up to 8 cumulative cycle points for the machine to record force deflection data.
- Initiate the test by pressing “start”.
- Allow the system to cycle through the test and take measurements at user specified cycle points.
- Open test completion, view and analyze the generated test report.
Calculations:
- Surface deformation (Dimple)
- Firmness retention (Support Firmness)
