A leading higher education institution approached ADMET recently with a challenging requirement: a testing system capable of handling both undergraduate teaching labs and advanced polymer research. The ideal solution needed to be versatile, economical, and able to accommodate a wide range of materials and test conditions.

The customer’s primary goals were twofold:

  • Undergraduate Teaching: Perform various mechanical tests on materials such as elastomers, polymers, wood, and metals. The equipment needed to be user-friendly and capable of handling different test types.
  • Polymer Research: Conduct tensile tests on a variety of polymers, including additively manufactured materials, according to ASTM D638 standards. Crucially, these tests had to be performed at temperatures near or above the materials’ glass transition points.

To address these needs, ADMET recommended the eXpert 2613 Dual Column Universal Testing System equipped with a 50kN load capacity and an integral environmental chamber. This configuration provides the versatility required for both teaching and research applications.

The environmental chamber is a standout feature, offering a temperature range from -80°C to +280°C (with 350°C as an available option). This capability is essential for accurate polymer testing at elevated temperatures. To ensure precise strain measurement under these demanding conditions, ADMET offers a variety of solutions, including video extensometers and DIC system packages.

By combining the eXpert 2613 with a comprehensive suite of grips and fixtures, the customer can confidently perform tensile, compression, and bend tests on a wide range of materials, both within and outside the environmental chamber.
