ASTM B565 | Metals | Shear Testing
ASTM B565 describes the test procedure to apply double-shear loading to aluminum products, such as rivets and cold-heading wires by a tension testing instrument to ensure safe use in their intended applications. This test procedure measures the maximum shear stress a specimen can withstand before it breaks.
Before conducting ASTM B565, it is important to read the entire specification in the relevant ASTM publication.

- Prepare the shear fixture surface and the specimen according to the directions in the standard.
- Mount the test specimen in the shear test instrument.
- Apply force at a uniform crosshead rate.
- Follow the crosshead speed and loading rate limits as described in the standard.
- Continue to test until specimen failure.
