ASTM B565 | Metals | Shear Testing

ASTM B565 describes the test procedure to apply double-shear loading to aluminum products, such as rivets and cold-heading wires by a tension testing instrument to ensure safe use in their intended applications. This test procedure measures the maximum shear stress a specimen can withstand before it breaks. 

Before conducting ASTM B565, it is important to read the entire specification in the relevant ASTM publication.

  1. Prepare the shear fixture surface and the specimen according to the directions in the standard.
  2. Mount the test specimen in the shear test instrument.
  3. Apply force at a uniform crosshead rate.
  4. Follow the crosshead speed and loading rate limits as described in the standard.
  5. Continue to test until specimen failure.
