ASTM D143 | Wood | Various Testing
ASTM D143 identifies several different mechanical test procedures to help compare the mechanical properties of various species of wood. You could consider wood to be a “living and breathing” product, which makes it quite difficult to compare one specimen to the next. Therefore, great care has to be taken into account in regards to the specimen selection, conditioning, moisture content, temperature, etc. when attempting to compare results of these tests and assigning mechanical properties to the various species of wood being tested.
Before conducting ASTM D143, it is important to read the entire specification in the relevant ASTM publication.

Below is a list of test procedures within ASTM D143 which can be carried out with a Universal Testing Machine or similar device:
- Static Bending – unique bend fixture is required, along with means to measure displacement at the specimen’s neutral axis
- Compression Parallel to Grain – Simple compression test of rectangular specimen stood up on its end
- Compression Perpendicular to Grain – Simple compression test of rectangular specimen laid on its side
- Hardness – Compression test using a “ball” shaped loading platen to determine the load required for the ball to penetrate to one half of its diameter
- Shear Parallel to Grain – Compressive loading using a unique shear jig to hold the specimen
- Cleavage – Tension using a unique test specimen geometry and grips that allows the grip ends to apply load within a circular opening on the specimen at one edge, and split the specimen apart
- Tension Parallel to Grain – This tension test most clearly represents a standard tensile test on a dogbone shaped specimen where the specimen is pulled from its ends. The use of an extensometer is common.
- Tension Perpendicular to Grain – This tension test uses a more unique specimen shape and associated grips that allow the specimen to be pulled apart from both sides in a similar fashion as the Cleavage test
- Nail Withdrawal – Nails are to be driven into different faces & location of the specimen for immediate withdrawal using a simple tensile grip configuration
