ASTM D575 | Plastics and ElastomersĀ | Compression Testing
ASTM D575 is a testing specification that determines the compression-deflection characteristics of rubber compounds. This test method is applicable to all rubber compounds other than hard rubber and sponge rubber.
Deflection is the change in thickness of the specimen upon application of a compressive force. This method involves one kind of compression stiffness measurement and covers two procedures:
Procedure A: Compression Test of Specified Deflection- A compression test in which the force required to cause a specified deflection is determined.
Procedure B: Compression Test at a Specified Force- A compression test in which the specified force is placed on the specimen and the resulting deflection is determined.
Before conducting ASTM D575, it is important to read the entire specification in the relevant ASTM publication.

Test Procedure A
- Prepare the test specimens as described in the method.
- Zero the load and position.
- Apply forceĀ until the specified deflection is reached.
- Release the force immediately at the same rate and repeat the load cycle a second time.
- Apply the force a third time until the specified deflection is again reached.
Test Procedure B
- Prepare the test specimens as described in the method.
- Zero the load and position.
- Apply the specified minor force.
- Apply the main force for 3 seconds. Stop the test.
- Read the deflection and calculate the percent deflection based on the original thickness of the specimen. Reading should not include the deflection caused by the minor force.
Note: ASTM recommends the use of two sheets of sandpaper, placed between each of the metal platens and the rubber sample. If you choose to do so, be sure to set zero with both sheets of sandpaper between the platens.

- Deflection Percentage
- Force per Area
