ASTM D2970 | Textiles | Tension Testing
ASTM D2970 covers the testing of industrial yarns of glass filaments, cords and fabric woven made for use in the manufacture of pneumatic tires. The standard includes a section specifically on the tensile property testing of yarns and cords, which will be covered in this summary. Two clamping options for tensile testing are provided: Option 1, drum clamp; and Option 2, pneumatic grips with fixed jaws integral to the clamping surfaces. The drum clamp option gives a more accurate measure of breaking strength since the grip design minimizes the effect of clamping. This option is recommended when only strength is measured. For elongation and modulus measurements, pneumatic grips should be used.
Note that the rate of tensile loading, type of grips, gauge length of specimen, temperature and humidity may modify the calculated tensile properties. It is recommended to follow the testing conditions outlined in the standard and note each variable for accurate and repeatable test results.
Prior to conducting ASTM D2970, it is important to read the entire specification in the relevant ASTM publication.

- Mount the specimen in the drum clamps or pneumatic grips. Adjust and position the specimen in the grip jaws as necessary. If drum clamps are used, wrap the specimen around the drum multiple times prior to securing it fully. If pneumatic grips are used, refer to ASTM D885 for the breaking strength test procedure.
- Start the tensile test at the specified rate.
- Run the test until specimen failure.
- Breaking Force
- Breaking Tenacity
- Modulus
