ASTM D3846 is a test method used to determine the in-plane shear strength of reinforced plastics in flat sheet form. In-plane shear strength is measured by applying a compressive load to a notched specimen of uniform width. The specimen is loaded edgewise in a supporting jig and the specimen failure occurs in shear mode between centered notches.
Shear strength testing is applicable to research and development data generation as well as to the quality control and specification purposes of reinforced plastics and materials used in the fibrous reinforcement industry. The test method outlined below is applicable to parallel-fiber reinforced plastics and nonparallel-fiber reinforced materials that cannot be tested by the short beam test procedure outlined in ASTM D2344.
