ASTM D7249 | Composites | Bend Testing
ASTM D7249 is a testing standard designed to determine the sandwich flexural stiffness, the shear strength, and shear modulus, or the compressive and tensile strengths of the facing material. Other testing standards to test composite material properties include ASTM C273 (core shear strength and shear modulus), ASTM C393 (core shear strength), and ASTM D7250 (flexural and shear stiffness).
Before conducting ASTM D7249, it is important to read the entire specification in the relevant ASTM publication.

Note that there are slight variations depending on the type of sample selected.
- Specimen preparation has significant importance for this test method. Prepare the test specimens as described in the standard. Measure and record the specimen length, width, and thickness in three places.
- Measure the length of the support and the span length.
- Mount the bend fixture to the machine and place the specimen into the test fixture with proper alignment.
- Attach the selected strain-recording device to the setup.
- Apply compressive force at a speed based on the suggestions in the standard (strain-controlled or constant crosshead speed).
- Measure and record the force-deflection data. Refer to Table 1 in the standard for the ultimate failure modes and record failure accordingly.
Calculations:
- Ultimate Stress
- Chord Modulus
- Flexural Stiffness
