ASTM F2258 | Tissue Adhesives | Tension Testing
ASTM F2258 describes a position-controlled tension test method to compare and characterize the adhesive strengths of a variety of tissue adhesives used to close or surgically seal soft tissue wounds. This test method helps medical device manufacturers evaluate and compare the adhesive bonding strength of wound-sealing adhesives on soft tissue and ensure quality control of the adhesive for use in their clinical applications. The test method utilizes a tensile testing system configured with appropriate grips, grafts of frozen or split pig skin, and an environmental bath so that manufacturers can evaluate the adhesive strengths of soft tissue adhesives via a position-controlled test method.
Before conducting ASTM F2258, it is important to read the entire specification in the relevant ASTM publication.
ASTM F2258 | Tissue Adhesives | Tension Testing
- Follow the apparatus requirements for position-control testing.
- Prepare, condition and stabilize the pig specimen and tissue adhesive according to the test procedure instructions.
- Secure the specimen in the appropriate grips of the tensile test instrument.
- Apply load to stretch the specimen at a constant rate according to the test procedure instructions.
- Continue stretching the specimen until failure is obtained.
