ASTM F2606 | Balloon-Expandable Stents | Bend Testing
ASTM F2606 describes a three-point bend testing method to quantify the bending flexible strength of balloon-expandable stents and stent deployment systems. Evaluation of a stent system’s flexibility provides manufacturers with a greater understanding of its ability to withstand bending moments and conform to the natural geometry of blood vessels, which enable proper function of the stent within the human body. The outlined test procedure requires a three-point bend fixture integrated on a universal testing system, in which a bending force is applied to the stent via position-controlled compression. Testing per ASTM F2606 applies to balloon expandable stents and deployable stent systems.
Before conducting ASTM F2606, it is important to read the entire specification in the relevant ASTM standard.

- Prepare the fixture as described in the standard’s directions.
- Mount the specimen in the center of the three-point bend fixture.
- Apply axial compression load at a constant rate until desired maximum deflection that the specimen can handle is achieved.
- Apply unloading to the specimen at the same constant rate to assess elastic recovery.
- Record force and deflection values with the testing system to evaluate stent material properties.
Calculations:
- Maximum deflection
- Maximum load
