ASTM F3014 | Surgical Needles | Puncture Testing
ASTM F3014 describes a position-control test method to quantify the resistance force required for a straight or curved surgical needle to consistently penetrate a medium multiple times. The ASTM F3014 standard test method enables manufacturers to evaluate the effectiveness of a surgical needle by quantifying the force required for a surgical needle to puncture a given tissue-like medium. The test procedure is repeated multiple times to measure needle durability during surgical procedures.
Note: ASTM F3014 has been withdrawn, this page now serves as a reference to a test method manufacturers may choose to follow.

- Utilize the appropriate equipment (static or torsional) to perform the testing procedure depending on whether the needle is curved or straight.
- Secure the needle into the appropriate needle-clamping fixture so that the needle doesn’t move.
- Check the needle before each puncture to make sure the needle is stable and positioned correctly.
- Confirm the entire length of the needle’s point passes through the medium perpendicular to the test medium at a uniform speed according to the standard’s guidelines.
- Refer to Table 1 within ASTM F3014 for curved needle’s testing ranges and Table 2 for straight needle’s testing ranges.
- Repeat the test procedure for the same needle at least 10 times.
