ASTM E111 | Metals | Tension Testing
ASTM E111 is a testing method that determines Young’s Modulus, tangent modulus, and chord modulus of structural materials. The calculations derived from this method characterize the elastic and compliance properties of structural materials. A uniaxial force is applied to the test specimen and the force and strain data are measured.
The test utilizes an electromechanical or hydraulic universal testing machine capable of applying force both in tensile and compressive directions and equipped with the appropriate specimen grips, an extensometer, and software. If calculations are to be made at elevated temperatures, a furnace capable of maintaining a uniform temperature should be used. Please note that this test method is only valid if creep is negligible.

- Prepare the test samples as described in the standard.
- For tension testing, mount the sample into the grips and clamp the extensometer. For compression testing, place the sample on the compression platens and mount the deflectometer.
- Start the test. The speed of testing should be low enough to avoid thermal effects of adiabatic expansion or contraction and should be high enough that creep will be negligible.
- Record load versus elongation or stress versus strain.
