ASTM D695 | Plastics and Elastomers | CompressionĀ Testing
ASTM D695 covers mechanical properties of unreinforced and reinforced rigid plastics during compressive loading. These tests are performed at relatively low rates of straining or loading. Test specimens are cylinders and prisms of standardized dimensions, with a high degree of parallelism between the loaded faces. A compression tool must be used to ensure flatness and parallelism of the loading surfaces, as the results of the test would be compromised by even slight eccentricity of loading.
Prior to conducting ASTM D695, it is important to read the entire specification in the relevant ASTM publication.

Condition the sample as specified for not less than 40 h prior to testing. For isotropic materials, at least five specimens shall be tested for each sample. For anisotropic materials, ten specimens shall be tested, five normal to and five parallel with the principal axis of anisotropy, for each sample.
- Place test specimen between the surfaces of the compressive fixture. Align the specimen’s center axis with the center line of the plunger.
- Adjust the crosshead until it makes contact with the compression fixture.
- Attach compressometer if stress-strain data is desired.
- Compress sample at the rate specified in the standard until failure.
- Compressive Strength
- Compressive Yield Strength
- Offset Yield Strength
- Modulus of Elasticity
