Biomedical manufacturers need to determine the mechanical and physical properties of their products to keep materials safe and durable throughout their lifespan. Bone screws, implants, luer locks, tubing, wiring, dental implants, and other various medical devices must all undergo quality control processes.

Materials testing, including determining the durability of products, is a required process. Researchers from prominent laboratories, medical companies, manufacturers, and leading universities come to ADMET to acquire necessary testing machines. Often, the twisting and torsion capabilities of screws, wires, tubing, luer locks, medical adhesives, and other devices must be analyzed before sending a product to market.

The torsional testing machines from ADMET provide a solution for maximum torsional stiffness and minimal axial friction as well as many more tests providing unlimited rotation in both directions. The eXpert 9000 Series offers both a horizontal and vertical orientation, depending on industry needs. As such, the ADMET engineering team can tailor these systems based on the requirements of customers, including extended lengths, environmental controls, and high-speed spindles, to name a few projects we have participated in in the past.

Horizontal systems include a fixed spindle with sliding tail stock. A reaction torque transducer can be attached to the tail stock or a rotary torque transducer can be assembled onto the drive spindle. Vertical systems, on the other hand, employ a sliding drive spindle.

The 9000 Series is capable of conducting both static and fatigue testing, which will help users determine how long a material will last after installation, whether the substance is a body implant, needle, orthopedic device, or tubing.

The eXpert 9600 serves by performing static testing while the eXpert 9900 model determines dynamic or fatigue properties. A dead weight pulley system is included with all torsion testing machines to apply compressive or tensile forces.

Axial-torsion load cells can be incorporated to analyze axial forces. Along with the wide variety of grips and fixtures, linear displacement transducers can also be included to measure axial spindle displacement. In addition, ADMET provides controllers and software products to deploy data analysis and reporting within the testing procedure.

ADMET provides two main controllers – the PC based MTESTQuattro controller product and the standalone eP2 Digital Controller. The MTESTQuattro is a PC-based application and well-suited for both new and retrofit machines. It provides analysis and control based on force, displacement, torque, and angle. This device provides accurate and repeatable tests that meet the specifications of ASTM and ISO standards.

The eP2 controller is a standard live system that provides similar control and analysis capability but requires pushing a button on the box versus clicking “Go” on the PC. This system stores up to six test procedures in eP2 versus an unlimited number of test procedures in the MTESTQuattro controller. The eP2 Digital Controller includes closed-loop servo capabilities along with load and crosshead position inputs, which offers the user accurate and repeatable testing capabilities.

Universities, medical device manufacturers, and laboratories interested in acquiring the eXpert 9000 Torsional Testing Series or other ADMET products are advised to call Vinny Milano, the Account Director for the biomedical sector, at (781)769-0850 ext. 21.
