ASTM D6195 | Adhesives | Peel Testing
The “Loop Tack” test is used to measure the tack force / strength of a pressure sensitive adhesive (PSA) according to ASTM D6195. Pressure sensitive adhesives are typically applied to films, labels, tapes, and stickers where the initial tack force is an important characteristic of the product. ASTM D6195 describes two ways to perform the test.
Method B uses a single purpose machine. Although the simplicity of one dedicated machine is nice, the loop tack test is not often the sole test of any manufacturer. Method A uses a universal testing machine otherwise known as a tensile testing machine. A Universal Testing Machine provides accurate test results, the same ease of use as the single purpose machine, and also allows you to perform many other common adhesive and material tests such as 90 degree peel adhesion tests, 180 degree peel adhesion tests, and standard tensile strength testing.
Prior to conducting ASTM D6195, it is important to read the entire specification in the relevant ASTM publication.

- Make a loop with your tape with the adhesive on the outside of the loop.
- Place the loop in the top grip of the universal testing machine.
- Bring the loop into contact with a 1 in cube fastened to the bottom of the universal testing machine at a rate of 12 in/min. Once the tape is in contact with the entire face of the 1 in square surface, reverse direction and pull the loop off at the same rate.
- Record the maximum force/stress required to remove the loop from the 1 in square surface
