Sample Preparation

Test methods often include a detailed description on how test specimens must be prepared to ensure repeatable and accurate test results. Furthermore, some methods recommend or require the use of a cutting die to ensure the specimen dimensions match the exact dimensions outlined in the standard.

ASTM and ISO Test Sample Cutting Dies

Presses

Toggle Press Cutting Die for ASTM Sample Preparation

Toggle Press for Cutting Die

Specimen cutting dies can be used with a toggle press or a mallet handle.

Our toggle presses are manually-operated and exert a force up to 1 ¼ tons. Note that the same toggle press can be used with different cutting dies with the respective shank adapter to mount the die to the press.

Cutting Die Re-sharpening and Certification Services

After prolonged use, cutting dies may need reconditioning. One way to determine the condition of an existing die is to investigate specimen rupture points. Prepare and cut test specimens and apply force until specimen failure. Repeat for a series of specimens. Remove specimens from the testing area and join the ruptured pieces together. Stack a series of joined-together specimens on top of each other and check the position of the specimen break. If the rupture point is at the same position on your test specimens, the die may be dull, nicked, or bent at that location.

We offer re-sharpening and recertification of existing cutting dies to enhance the quality of the die. This allows our customers to continue cutting specimens with the accuracy that comes from using a cutting die without having to purchase a new die. All our cutting dies are certified with a maintenance log for archiving as required per ISO equipment traceability.
